school gardens
Like an allotment scheme, the best way to set up and develop a school garden is through a committee. Look for volunteers among the school staff, parents and local residents. Define the purpose of the garden – will it be used to grow plants, vegetables or both? A garden can be used as an education tool across the curriculum. Ensure the garden receives plenty of sunlight, has good drainage and is easily accessible. You may need to assign a gardener throughout the summer months and on school breaks.

Food Minister Trevor Sargent has launched the Incredible Edibles programme, which is run by Agri Aware and encourages children to grow fruit and vegetables at school. A DVD and growing pack is available for every school in the country. For more information visit the Incredible Edibles site.
