Programme - Corrigan's City Farm

Greens support Richard Corrigan's mission to start a homegrown food revolution

The Green Party's Minister for Food and Horticulture Trevor Sargent has encouraged people to tune into a new television series that will follow a group of rookie gardeners as they learn how to grow their own food on an allotment.

On RTE one, Tuesdays 8.30pm (First aired: Tue 21 April 2009) Corrigan's City Farm will follow 24 volunteers as they strive to transform a plot of derelict wasteland in Cork into a lush and fertile smallholding.

Minister Sargent will feature in the first episode, showcasing his organic kitchen garden in Ballbriggan.

He said: "Last month I launched the Green Party's campaign to 'Get Ireland Growing' and we have been stunned by the positive reaction. There is clearly a great interest out there  amongst people who want to learn more about growing their own food.

"I showed Richard Corrigan around my garden and we discussed how important it is that people become more aware of the food they eat. Growing and eating your own food is incredibly satisfying. It's also healthy and good for the environment.

"I wish Richard's volunteers every encouragement in their mission to transform their piece of land into a thriving, bountiful allotment. And from these baby steps I am confident that we can start a national growing revolution," Minister Sargent concluded.

Corrigan's City Farm - I watched the first episode last night.  It contained not one jot of horticultural information or any interesting culinary tips.  It seems to me to be an uninspiring attempt at a Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, River Cottage
The only thing louder than Corrigan’s gushing is the domestic food growing bandwagon the program makers have jumped on to.  To find his 12 volunteers to work his 2 sites, Corrigan decides not to include any of the citizens on the Cork City Council allotment waiting lists as he is looking for people with ‘more passion’.  What an insult to all those people who have probably been growing food for years, despite being on a waiting list!
Thankfully the evenings are now long enough that I’ll be out in my garden for the broadcasting of the remaining episodes.
