your garden

Hi,
I just started planting vegetables this year for my first time ever. I started because with so much negativity about the place regarding the recession, I wanted to do something positive. The results are fantastic for me and my family and not too bad for the vegetables. It has given us a new outlook, instead of talking about the recession, we are talking about our vegetables. We have two little girls, 5 and 6 and I can't believe how into it they are, they don't even mind the weeding and we have a 14 year old son who slagged me alot at the start but is now getting into it. Most of our vegetables are doing well so far, my herbs were a little slow to get off but I think I planted them a little late. We sowed potatoes in bags and they are doing very well as are the lettuce( after they got over their initial attack by the slugs), cabbage, turnip, spinach, celery and broad bins.
Its amazing what you learn by doing (whether its right or wrong) and also by listening. My husband's father has given us great advice as to how they used to do it. We also got great advice from the local garden centre such as jars of beer and eggshells to deter slugs and rotten grass to deter carrot fly or marigolds to prevent other flies. Its also great for the children as they learn to appreciate their food and start to think about where it came from and what it took to get to their plate.
I hope others are getting as much from their gardening as we are.
