  • Get your equipment right, remember it doesn't have to be expensive, you'll need pots and tubs and compost
  • For larger scale gardening, you may need a spade or fork and a trowel
  • Make sure all containers have holes at the bottom for drainage
  • Start with easy to grow plants and herbs, such as lettuce, chives, tomatoes, scallions or herbs in a window box
  • Select varieties you'll savour and will use in salads and cooking
  • Grow flowers among your vegetables to attract insects
  • Remember TLC - water, particularly in warm weather
