slugs - destroyer of lettuce

Call me selfish, but I don't want to share the food I'm growing with freeloades.
Any tips for dealing with these slimey slugs and snails?

GET A DUCK OR TOO THEY JUST LOVE FEEDING ON SLUGS. OF COURSE IF U DO NOT HAVE ROOM  SAND AROUND YOUR CROP THEY WONT CROSS IT

Maybe change your variety?Slugs are quite rampant in my garden but my lettuce has remained untouched!

@ fruity.cordial - that's a good idea.
Perhaps you could tell us what varieites have been successful for you? Thanks

There are traps you can buy, but you can make your own.

The best I've found is a beer trap. This entices slugs in with the lure of free beer - but then they get greedy and drown - (probably not a bad way to go)

  1. bury an old jam jar/glass (or similar) right up to the rim
  2. fill this with beer (flat or cheapo will do - slugs aren't choosy)
  3. make a lid from a tile, (just to keep the rain out) and prop this over it - BUT make sure there's still room for the sugs to crawl in; Use a couple of stones on the corners.

You'll have to empty this out every now and again, and pop in some more beer.
